While internet and phone services remain down, here’s what to know about the fighting in Gaza since Israel announced an expansion of its military operations.


The Israeli army said on Saturday morning that fighter jets hit 150 “terror tunnels, underground combat spaces and additional underground infrastructure” in overnight raids, adding that “several Hamas terrorists were killed”.


Rocket alert sirens have sounded in southern Israel, according to Israeli media, with no immediate report of injuries and damage. he Times of Israel named the communities on alert as Nahal Oz and Magen.

 

Earlier, the IDF said Israeli fighter jets had killed the head of Hamas's aerial branch, Asem Abu Rakaba. Israel has now released this footage purportedly showing the strike that killed him. 


Hamas’s armed wing had previously said its fighters were confronting an Israeli ground incursion in Beit Hanoon, in the northern Gaza Strip, and east Bureij, in the centre, adding that “violent engagements are taking place on the ground”.


Late on Friday, the Israeli army said its ground forces were “extending the ground operations tonight”.


The Israeli army said it had increased its strikes “in a very significant way”, while the Qassam Brigades said on Telegram it responded with “salvos of rockets”.


Israeli military spokesman Major Nir Dinar, meanwhile, told AFP: “Our troops are operating inside Gaza as they did yesterday”. Israeli forces had made limited ground incursions on Wednesday and Thursday nights.


Israel is still only carrying out "limited moves" rather than a large ground manoeuvre into Gaza, said a former Israel Defence Forces head of Palestinian affairs.
