The Respiration system is a series or group of organs that takes oxygen from the air into our body and uses it for our body processes and brings out the waste product known as carbon dioxide out. All of these process takes place everyday and every time. Without the respiratory cycle, we cannot leave. During respiratory, only two gases are used known as the Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide. Also, our body cells needs this oxygen constantly before they can function.

Breathing and Respiration are not equal. Breathing is the process of getting air into the lungs and bringing out carbon dioxide whereas  Breathing forms part of respiration because, respiration uses these oxygen we take to perform some functions such as growth and reproduction. Also the oxygen we take are sent to the heart and from the heart to the bloodstream. This makes the body perfect because when there is no oxygen in your blood, your body cannot perform some activities.

The Need For Respiration

1. The energy needed by the cells is stored in the form of chemicals in food in the body.

2. This chemical energy is only made available to the cells of the body during the process of respiration.

3. Note that, if respiration does not occur the cells in the body will not have the energy needed for cellular activities.

4. All the cells of the body will ultimately die.

Hazards to the Respiratory System

1. The respiratory system can be damaged by a variety of chemicals found in the environment; ranging from smoke from cars and industries and other domestic activities such as the use of firewood for cooking, sleeping in rooms that are badly lit and poorly ventilated or rooms filled with smoke from mosquito coils, dust particles from synthetic carpels, household cleaning products such as air fresheners and people  work at the fields that generate a  lot of dust e.g. sandblasters, stone cutters, quarry workers, miners, construction workers and many more.

2. Tobacco smoking is a major hazard to the respiratory system of man . This is because the smoke from the average cigarette contains numerous chemicals, some of which are highly toxic( poisonous) and may cause lung cancer.

3. Respiratory system is also subject to allergic reactions such as hay fever and asthma; brought about when the immune system is stimulated by foreign materials such as pollen, dust or other irritants like fur or hair of animals(cats, dogs, sheep   etc ) and even insects.

4. Cigarette smoke inhaled into the lungs causes more mucus to be secreted which accumulates in the bronchioles , thereby , blocking it. It also irritates their airways and then causes the cilia to lose its protective function that is;  not being able to trap potential microorganisms and dust particles. Some of the diseases that result from cigarette smoking include bronchitis and lung cancer.

5. Inhaling of petroleum, disel and other vehicles oil can also destroy the respiratory organs. Disease that will result from this practice is called Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcaniosis.
