TEACHERS' WELFARE: THE OVERLOOKED PIECE IN EDUCATION POLICY*

featured img

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has sounded a warning bell, urging political parties to shift their focus from mere promises to tangible actions that prioritize teachers' welfare. For far too long, successive governments have prioritized student benefits, leaving teachers demotivated and overburdened.

*The Neglect of Teachers' Welfare*

NAGRAT's Ashanti Regional Secretary, Atindana Baba Joseph, expressed frustration that political parties' education policies consistently overlook the very individuals responsible for implementing them – teachers. Critical issues such as:

- Lack of accommodation for rural teachers

- Delayed payment of allowances

- Inadequate teaching and learning facilities

- Limited career progression opportunities

- Insufficient training and professional development

remain unaddressed. This neglect has resulted in low morale, high teacher turnover rates, and a decline in the overall quality of education.

*A Call to Action: Make Teachers the Central Element*

NAGRAT demands that political parties recognize teachers as the pivotal element in enhancing education. To achieve this, they propose:

- Improved welfare packages, including competitive salaries and benefits

- Housing policies that provide affordable and decent accommodation for teachers

- Enhanced facilities for teaching and learning, including modern technology and resources

- Curricula reform that reflects the needs of the 21st century

- Refining the Free SHS policy to address existing challenges and ensure sustainability

*The Value of Teachers*

Registrar of the National Teaching Council, Dr. Christian Addai-Poku, emphasized the importance of engaging technocrats to understand educational policies like the Teacher Licensure Examination. He stressed that politicians must recognize the worth of teachers, who are the backbone of the education system.

*Teachers' Plea: Enhance Our Welfare*

NAGRAT's message is clear: "We are born to teach, whoever comes to power, we will teach. However, if you enhance our welfare, we will teach to the best of our ability." It's time for political parties to listen and act.

*The Way Forward*

To ensure quality education, political parties must:

- Consult with teachers and education stakeholders in policy-making

- Allocate sufficient resources to address teachers' welfare concerns

- Develop and implement policies that promote teacher retention and motivation

- Monitor and evaluate the impact of education policies on teachers and students

*Conclusion*

Teachers are the key to unlocking the potential of future generations. It's imperative that political parties prioritize their welfare, providing a supportive environment that fosters growth, motivation, and excellence. By doing so, we can ensure a brighter future for our education system and the nation as a whole.
