Recently, the Minister of Energy and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, called on Ghanaians to be wary of what he described as "sweet stories" being peddled by the National Democratic Congress. He was speaking at a rally in Kumasi where he tasked citizens with critically considering political promises and narratives.

Dr. Prempeh criticized the NDC for what he described as misleading claims regarding the performance of the current government. This, he said, was supported by the major victories being chalked up in the energy sector by the ruling New Patriotic Party. He said the NPP has increased access to electricity and taken measures to ensure stability in the supply of power. The economist argues that indeed, the NPP's policies have contributed directly to economic growth and improved living standards across the country.

Speaking, the former Deputy Minister indicated that "the NDC seeks to paint a rosy picture of the past, but we cannot afford to forget the power crises and economic hardships that characterised their tenure." He, therefore, called on Ghanaians to look at the real progress achieved by the NPP in government, emphatic especially concerning energy supply and infrastructural development.

He also reminded the electorate that politicians are to be held accountable over promises they make. "We must ask the right questions and make sure our leaders are committed to actual solutions-not just nice talking points," he added.

This, Dr. Prempeh said amidst growing tension and contestation of the two leading political parties' narratives ahead of the elections. While the NPP has been touting its achievements, the NDC will seek to make political capital out of dissatisfaction among the populace. In any case, that argument is likely to increase as the election draws near.

With Ghanaians heading to the polls, critical engagement with political promises becomes an important appeal toward the fashioning of this country's future. Dr. Prempeh's reminder is stated to bring out some of the intricacies of the political choices available to one and the prudential choices at the ballot box.
