Kufuor endorsement of Bawumia isn't a sin; you're no longer an NPP member so what's your problem? — Anyidoho slams Alan
Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has strongly rebuked former NPP Presidential candidate Alan Kyerematen for his criticism of the endorsement of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia by former President John Agyekum Kufuor. Anyidoho, in a public statement, dismissed Kyerematen’s objections to Kufuor’s support for Bawumia, stating that the endorsement was not a “sin” and questioning Kyerematen’s authority to comment given that he is no longer an active member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In his comments, Anyidoho suggested that Kyerematen, having stepped down from the NPP presidential race and distanced himself from the party, should refrain from interfering in matters that concern the party’s internal processes. "You're no longer a member of the NPP, so what’s your problem?" Anyidoho retorted, emphasizing that Kyerematen had lost his right to voice opinions on the party’s leadership decisions.
The controversy stemmed from Kufuor’s public endorsement of Dr. Bawumia as the NPP’s preferred candidate for the 2024 presidential elections. Kyerematen, who had also expressed his interest in leading the NPP, criticized the former president’s support, claiming that it was an attempt to undermine party unity and bypass internal democratic processes.
Anyidoho, however, argued that Kufuor, as a respected former president and elder statesman, had the right to endorse any candidate he believed was fit to lead the country. He pointed out that the endorsement of Bawumia by Kufuor was a personal choice and in no way a betrayal of the party’s values or principles. Anyidoho also reminded Kyerematen that politics is dynamic and endorsements from political figures like Kufuor are a normal part of the process.
As the NPP prepares for the 2024 elections, tensions within the party have been rising, with rival factions jostling for power. Anyidoho’s comments serve as a reminder that intra-party rivalry can spill over into public criticism, even among former party members.
