Inspector-General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has urged collaboration with religious leaders in unmasking individuals or groups likely to disrupt the peace of this country in the run-up to the 2024 general elections. According to him, religious leaders are very instrumental in ensuring peace and unity in this crucial period.

Speaking at a meeting with religious bodies in Accra, IGP Dampare acknowledged the influence of religious leaders in shaping public opinion and promoting social harmony. He stressed that the upcoming elections must be conducted in a peaceful atmosphere, free from violence, intimidation, and electoral malpractice. To achieve this, he urged the leaders to help identify potential troublemakers and provide necessary support to the security agencies in maintaining law and order.

"We are all responsible for ensuring that the 2024 elections are peaceful, free, and fair. You, as trusted community leaders, have the moral authority to influence your followers in influencing us to unmask those who would disturb the peace in this period," Dampare said.

The IGP elaborated that while the police force is committed to ensuring security during the election, their success depends for the most part on cooperation with the public and key stakeholders within the community, including religious organizations. He underlined that sharing of intelligence between the police and religious groups would be one of the cardinal ingredients in preempting any acts of violence or disruption.

Present religious leaders hailed the call by the IGP for partnership and said they would support the police to ensure peace. They assured him of their commitment to using their platforms to preach unity, tolerance, and respect for the electoral process.

The meeting also provided the opportunity for the police to outline strategies for ensuring security during the elections, including increased patrols, surveillance, and close monitoring of electoral hotspots. Dampare reiterated that the police will remain impartial and act swiftly against any acts of violence or election-related offenses.

With the 2024 elections looming, the partnership between the police and religious leaders is likely to be very instrumental in achieving peace and ensuring a credible, free election process.
