The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has raised serious allegations against the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Electoral Commission (EC) over what he claims is a deliberate attempt to manipulate the outcome of Ghana’s upcoming December 7 general elections.

Speaking at a rally in Sekondi, Western Region, on November 26, Mahama alleged that the EC had enlisted 65 individuals affiliated with the NPP as part of its temporary election staff in the Gomoa East constituency, Central Region. According to him, these individuals were handpicked based on recommendations from an NPP Member of Parliament and other party executives.

Mahama described this recruitment as clear evidence of a scheme to undermine the integrity of the polls. “We have long suspected a coordinated effort between the EC and the NPP to tilt the results in their favor. This incident in Gomoa East is a glaring example of this collusion,” he said.

Mahama cited a video that purportedly shows an NPP MP and party executives submitting a list of their members to the EC. He questioned the neutrality of such individuals serving at polling stations. “If someone who is openly aligned with the NPP is managing the polling process, can we truly expect fairness? This is why we have been vocal about the EC’s bias,” he added.

The former president urged Ghanaians to be vigilant and to closely monitor the election process. He cautioned that while citizens may cast their votes correctly, the integrity of the system could be compromised by those seeking to manipulate the outcome.

Concerns Over Electoral Fairness

This is not the first time Mahama has raised concerns about the neutrality of the EC under its current leadership. The NDC has previously accused the Commission of implementing policies and practices that disproportionately favor the ruling party.

Mahama’s latest allegations have reignited debates about the EC’s credibility as Ghana prepares for one of its most contentious elections. The claims also come amidst heightened political tension, with both major parties—NPP and NDC—accusing each other of unethical practices.

The Role of Security Agencies

The NDC flagbearer called on security agencies to ensure impartiality during the elections. He emphasized that their role is critical in maintaining peace and order, especially in politically volatile areas.

Mahama expressed concerns about reports of voter intimidation and alleged that security forces were being used to suppress voter turnout in opposition strongholds. He called on the international community to closely observe Ghana’s election process, adding, “We must safeguard the sanctity of our democracy.”

Reactions to the Allegations

The NPP has yet to officially respond to Mahama’s accusations. However, party insiders have previously dismissed similar claims as baseless attempts by the NDC to discredit the EC and create doubt in the minds of voters.

Political analysts have weighed in on the situation, with some suggesting that these allegations could further polarize an already divided electorate. Others argue that they underscore the urgent need for greater transparency in the electoral process to ensure public trust.

Implications for Ghana’s Democracy

Ghana has long been hailed as a beacon of democracy in Africa, with its elections often cited as models for other nations. However, the rising tension and allegations of electoral malpractice threaten to erode this reputation.

The December 7 election is particularly significant, as it will determine the direction of the country amidst economic challenges and social unrest. Both the NPP and NDC are vying for public support with promises to address key issues such as unemployment, infrastructure development, and corruption.

Call to Action

As the election date approaches, Mahama urged all Ghanaians to actively participate in safeguarding the democratic process. He encouraged voters to remain vigilant, report any irregularities, and demand accountability from election officials.

In his closing remarks, Mahama said, “The power of the people is stronger than those who seek to suppress it. Together, we must stand for justice, fairness, and the future of our beloved Ghana.”

The Path Forward

With just days to go until the elections, all eyes are on the EC, political parties, and security agencies to uphold the principles of democracy. The outcome of the December 7 polls will not only determine the next government but will also serve as a litmus test for the resilience of Ghana’s democratic institutions.

This election presents an opportunity for Ghana to reaffirm its commitment to free, fair, and transparent elections. However, this will require concerted efforts from all stakeholders to address the concerns raised and ensure that the will of the people is genuinely reflected in the final results.
