A troubling incident occurred on the Akosombo-Accra highway on November 29, 2024, when one of the vehicles in the convoy of Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the vice-presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was attacked.
The attack is alleged to have been initiated by a Police outrider leading a convoy believed to consist of New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters. The incident took place between Akuse and Kpong as Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s team returned from a two-day campaign tour in the Oti Region.
According to the driver of the affected vehicle, the windshield of his car was shattered after one of the police motor riders from the other convoy reportedly threw an object at it. The driver expressed suspicion that the convoy in question belonged to the NPP, though this has yet to be independently verified.
Despite the alarming nature of the incident, no injuries were reported. The team managed to continue their journey after the attack.
The circumstances surrounding the altercation have raised concerns about tensions between political supporters ahead of the December 7 general elections. This incident underscores the need for calm and tolerance among political parties and their followers to ensure peaceful electoral processes.
Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, a former Minister of Education and a distinguished academic, has been actively campaigning alongside former President John Dramani Mahama, the NDC’s presidential candidate. Their campaign tour in the Oti Region included engagements with local communities, stakeholders, and party supporters.
This incident has already sparked conversations about the role of law enforcement in election-related activities. The alleged involvement of a Police outrider in the attack raises questions about neutrality and professionalism, especially during a politically sensitive period.
The leadership of both the NDC and NPP are yet to release official statements addressing the incident. However, many Ghanaians have taken to social media to call for investigations and accountability.
As the nation prepares for the upcoming elections, such incidents highlight the importance of maintaining peace and decorum. Political leaders and security agencies are being urged to prioritize safety and discourage acts of violence or provocation that could mar the electoral process. This article is based on a report by 3News,
