The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs Jean Adukwei Mensa, has nudged the commission’s officials that their primary responsibility is to ensure the conduct of a free and fair election but not to secure the election of any individual as President or Member of Parliament. Her comments were made on December 7, during what she described as her final press briefing before the 2024 election day.

Mrs Mensa highlighted the importance of adhering to the commission’s motto—transparency, fairness, and integrity—and urged all officials to carry out their duties with the utmost professionalism and honesty. She reiterated that the goal of the EC is to conduct elections that truly reflect the will of the people, not to advance the political interests of any candidate or party.

The EC Chairperson called on officials to be meticulous in the election process, particularly when counting votes. She encouraged them to accurately tally the votes and complete the necessary forms professionally, reminding them to act with integrity and truthfulness at every step of the process. “Count the votes accurately and fill out the forms professionally. We urge you to do it with integrity and truth and let God guide you,” she said, reinforcing the significance of honesty and transparency in the election process.

Mrs Mensa in another way prompted officials of the critical responsibility of ensuring that valid votes are not wrongly rejected. To facilitate a democratic process that allows the people's voices to be heard through their votes is the role of the commission which she stressed. The ultimate goal for that is to guarantee that the election is free and fair, maintaining a transparent environment that reflects the true desires of the electorate.

In addition to that, the press orientation was attended by representatives from the Association of African Election Authorities and other observer groups, who are expected to monitor the process and ensure its credibility. Mrs Mensa exhibited her reliance on the ability of the commission’s officials, assuring them that the people’s trust and faith in them were well placed. “We believe in you and trust in you to conduct free, fair, and transparent elections,” she affirmed, as the commission prepared for the upcoming national elections.
