Bawumia Pledges Rebuilding Aid, CCTV, and Insurance for Kantamanto Traders

A devastating fire at Kantamanto Market in Accra has left countless traders in despair, destroying property, livelihoods, and tragically claiming one life. Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, during a visit to the site on Monday, expressed his sorrow over the incident, describing it as a heartbreaking loss for the traders and their families. Addressing the community, he assured them of government support to help rebuild the market and restore their livelihoods. Dr. Bawumia promised to provide essential building materials, including wood, cement, and roofing sheets, to expedite the reconstruction process. The Vice President also commended the traders' resilience, as many had already begun initial efforts to rebuild.

In addition to the immediate rebuilding efforts, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the importance of enhancing market security to prevent similar incidents in the future. He announced plans to personally fund the installation of CCTV cameras in the market once it is reconstructed, ensuring better surveillance and protection for traders and their goods. While investigations into the cause of the fire are still ongoing, initial reports suggest the possibility of arson. Dr. Bawumia urged caution in drawing conclusions and stressed the importance of establishing the facts. Furthermore, he proposed the introduction of insurance schemes for traders to offer financial protection against such unforeseen disasters in the future.

The Kantamanto Market fire has reignited calls for stronger government intervention to safeguard the livelihoods of Ghana's traders, particularly in major commercial hubs. Known for its vibrant activity and economic significance, the market's destruction has left hundreds grappling with significant losses. Dr. Bawumia's proactive response, including financial aid for rebuilding and security upgrades, has provided a glimmer of hope for the affected traders. This tragedy underscores the urgent need for better market infrastructure, security measures, and insurance coverage to protect the livelihoods of traders and ensure such disasters do not cripple Ghana’s commercial sector in the future.
