Thousands Face Life-Threatening Ailments From Lead Poisoning In Ebonyi State
In Enyigba community, Abakaliki Local Government Area, and Ameka community, Ezza South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, thousands of residents are suffering from life-threatening ailments caused by lead poisoning. The presence of large deposits of lead in these areas has brought about environmental hazards and degradation, contaminating crops, water, and air.
Residents of the affected communities have expressed concerns over the health risks associated with lead poisoning. They lamented that they have no choice but to consume contaminated food and water, as they lack access to alternative sources. Chief Ewa Nworie, a community leader, stated that the lead deposit prevents crops from growing, and the water from the rivers and streams is not safe for drinking.
The health risks associated with lead poisoning are severe. Dr. Charles Akuma, a medical practitioner, explained that lead can cause respiratory diseases, nervous system disorders, kidney damage, and even death. He emphasized that young children are particularly vulnerable to the toxic effects of lead.
Prof. Wilberforce Oti, a lecturer at Ebonyi State University, conducted research on the effects of lead mining on crops. He found that 90% of crops from the mining areas are contaminated with lead. Prof. Oti stressed the need for the state government to sensitize the public on the dangers of consuming contaminated farm produce and water.
The Ebonyi State government has acknowledged the issue and is taking steps to address it. The Commissioner for Solid Mineral Development, Chidi Onyia, stated that the state government is ensuring that mining companies adhere to the agreement of providing basic amenities to the host communities. However, Onyia disputed Prof. Oti's findings, stating that the lecturer did not make public the result of his scientific research to support his claims.
The issue of lead poisoning in Ebonyi State highlights the need for proper regulation and monitoring of mining activities. The state government must ensure that mining companies prioritize the health and well-being of the host communities. Additionally, there is a need for public awareness and education on the dangers of lead poisoning and the importance of proper environmental management.
In conclusion, the situation in Ebonyi State is a wake-up call for the government and stakeholders to take immediate action to address the issue of lead poisoning. The health and well-being of the residents of Enyigba and Ameka communities, as well as other affected areas, must be prioritized.
