Jose Mourinho has made explosive comments about the Turkish Super Lig, calling it a "toxic" environment full of corruption and scandal. His remarks came after a controversial match between league leaders Galatasaray and Goztepe, which ended with a 2-1 victory for Galatasaray. In the aftermath of the game, Goztepe issued a lengthy statement accusing the referees of biased officiating and called for the introduction of a “temporary foreign referee system” to prevent further incidents. Mourinho, who was speaking after his Fenerbahce team’s win over Hatayspor, did not hesitate to add his voice to the growing criticism of the league. Having been in football for more than three decades, Mourinho expressed disbelief at the situation, claiming he had never witnessed anything like it in all his years as a coach. He seemed frustrated with the state of football in Turkey, pointing out that it was beyond comprehension and lacked any logical explanation.

Mourinho’s comments went beyond just the game between Galatasaray and Goztepe. He was critical of the overall environment in the Turkish league, suggesting that the scandalous nature of the competition was widely accepted, even by the winners themselves. According to Mourinho, this mentality of winning at all costs, regardless of how the victory is achieved, was the most concerning aspect of the situation. He emphasized that such an approach created a negative and toxic atmosphere in the league, which not only affected the players’ morale but also damaged trust in the integrity of the competition. The Italian coach stated that the issue had become a widespread problem in Turkish football, with many people turning a blind eye to the corruption and unethical practices taking place within the system. Mourinho’s frustration was evident as he described the situation as "scandalous," repeatedly using the term to emphasize how deeply unsettling the problem was for him and, presumably, for other coaches and teams involved in the league.

This is not the first time that Mourinho has criticized refereeing in the Turkish Super Lig. Back in November, he similarly slammed the officials for their decisions and suggested that his team, Fenerbahce, was fighting against a larger system that was working against them. Fenerbahce currently trails Galatasaray by eight points in the title race, with the latter team enjoying an unbeaten run in the league after 17 matches. Mourinho’s comments are part of a broader pattern of frustration with the way football is officiated in the Turkish league. Earlier in the season, Mourinho made headlines with his scathing remarks following Fenerbahce’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League, where he also raised concerns about the refereeing. In both instances, Mourinho’s statements reflect a deep dissatisfaction with the standards of officiating and a belief that the system in place is unfair, toxic, and ultimately damaging to the integrity of Turkish football.
