50 Ghanaians in US receive final deportation orders, set to return by mid-year – Ablakwa
Fifty Ghanaian nationals detained in the United States have been issued final deportation orders and are expected to return to Ghana by the middle of 2025. This was revealed by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, during a parliamentary session on Thursday, March 13.
Providing an update from Ghana’s mission in Washington, the Minister disclosed that a total of 150 Ghanaians are currently being held in detention centers across the U.S. for various offenses, including internet fraud, illegal entry, and rape. Among them, 50 individuals have received final deportation rulings, while the remaining 100 cases are either still under appeal or have been dismissed.
Ablakwa further noted that deportation arrangements for three individuals have already been finalized. These Ghanaians are scheduled to leave the U.S. on April 1, 2025. In addition, three others have also completed their deportation processing and will depart on commercial flights on March 19, March 28, and April 1, 2025.
The Foreign Affairs Minister explained that diplomatic efforts have been made on behalf of one Ghanaian detainee who was granted release due to medical reasons, allowing him to seek necessary healthcare. Meanwhile, the Ghanaian Embassy in the U.S. has conducted interviews with ten of the detainees to verify their nationality and ensure they have received due process before deportation.
Ablakwa assured Parliament that the government remains committed to protecting the rights of Ghanaians abroad while ensuring that deportation processes follow legal and humanitarian considerations. The situation highlights the continuous engagement between Ghanaian authorities and their U.S. counterparts on issues related to immigration and deportation.
With the deportation of the 50 individuals expected to take place within the coming months, the government is preparing to receive them and facilitate their reintegration into society. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to monitor developments closely and provide necessary support to affected individuals.
