After it was suggested that he was teasing his own fans during their 1-0 defeat at Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou said, "it's amazing how things get misinterpreted." Before Pape Sarr's equalizer was disallowed, the Spurs manager appeared to cup his ear to the away fans, just moments after the midfielder was booed as he was brought off the bench. But the Spurs boss played down the gesture, saying: "It’s incredible how things get interpreted. We’d just scored, I wanted to hear them cheer. I wanted them to be overjoyed. "It is possible for people to deduce from that that I am making a point about something. "At that point, I thought we might continue and win the game. I just felt like momentum was moving in our direction. He stated, "It doesn't bother me." when asked about the reaction of the fans to Sarr's hiring. It's not the first time they've booed my substitutions or my decisions.
That's fine; they are permitted to do so. However, we just scored a goal and an equalizer. When the final whistle blew, there was even more speculation that Postecoglou had disconnected from the fans because he stayed close to the halfway line instead of moving toward the opposing end to get their cheers. It came after traveling fans' chants of "you don't know what you're doing" toward their manager were heard during the game. Discussing those chants, Postecoglou said: "It just doesn't affect me. If that's what the fans feel and if they feel that I'm not doing a good job then they've got every right to express that, they pay their hard-earned money and they they follow the club here.
"They're the ones that will be here long after I'm gone, so it doesn't affect me. What I kind of try and focus on is the things I can control."
The result leaves Spurs 14th in the Premier League and without a win in their last four games, losing three times. The Australian said that VAR was "killing the game" and expressed his dissatisfaction with the decision to deny Sarr's strike. After watching multiple replays of the challenge, referee Craig Pawson reversed his decision after being advised by VAR to examine the pitchside monitor. Discussing the incident, Postecoglou told Sky Sports: "It's [VAR] killing the game, mate. The game is not the same as it used to be. "You don't know what you're going to get, you're standing around for 12 minutes, it's killing the game.
Sarr was brought on as a substitute by Postecoglou a few minutes prior to his disallowed goal, but this decision was met with bewilderment by the travelling Tottenham fans, who chanted 'you don't know what you're doing' at the head coach for hooking Lucas Bergvall, who was one of their brightest players to that point. After Sarr appeared to have scored, Postecoglou cupped his ears to the jubilant supporters, but he has claimed this gesture was taken out of context.
On Sunday, Postecoglou's Tottenham face Southampton at home, who could be relegated from the Premier League if they lose. Spurs fans are planning a protest against the club's ownership prior to the game.
