CDM Warns Mahama Government: Ghana Must Not Become a ‘Cocaine Coast’
The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has issued a strong warning to the Mahama administration, urging immediate and transparent action in response to ongoing allegations involving questionable international flights. The group fears that if the situation is not handled with urgency and clarity, Ghana could earn the damaging reputation of being a “Cocaine Coast.”
In its statement, CDM emphasized the serious consequences of either weak supervision or even the perception of it. Such lapses could lead to heightened international scrutiny of Ghanaian travelers and goods, posing a threat to the nation’s global standing. The organization stressed that beyond the reputational damage, there could also be adverse economic implications, such as reduced investor confidence, tighter restrictions on exports, and more rigorous checks for Ghanaian nationals abroad.
According to CDM, the current situation has the potential to severely undermine Ghana’s image as a secure and well-regulated nation. “Ghana must not become a permissive corridor for narcotic trafficking,” the group firmly stated, highlighting the need for swift action to prevent the country from being seen as a safe passage for drug smuggling activities.
The organization called on the government to take decisive steps to protect the integrity and international credibility of the nation. It demanded full transparency from relevant state institutions, particularly the Civil Aviation Authority and the National Security Secretariat. CDM further urged Parliament to lead a comprehensive and open investigation into the allegations, encouraging collaboration with global partners if necessary to ensure an impartial and credible inquiry.
The CDM’s statement reflects growing public concern over the country’s vulnerability to international narcotics networks, especially if proper checks and balances are not maintained. It also underscores the need for proactive measures to reassure both domestic and international stakeholders that Ghana remains committed to upholding law, order, and transparency in its aviation and national security operations.
