Two terrible errors from Andre Onana, the second in the final minute of injury-time, handed Lyon two goals as Manchester United played fairly well in earning a 2-2 draw in their UEFA Europa League quarter-final first leg.
United started the game off well, despite the sweltering conditions inside the stadium. Onana decided not to come for Thiago Almada's free kick on 25 minutes, dived when it was almost past him, and could only help it into the net. However, just before the break, United were level, with a corner cleared and a shot from Manuel Ugarte that went wide before Leny Yoro leapt and twisted to score his first goal for United. United improved in the second half and, with two minutes to go, looked to have seized a crucial win, Joshua Zirkzee heading home powerfully after being found by Bruno Fernandes' cross.
Lyon took the lead in the 25th minute thanks to a hopeful free-kick from Thiago Almada and abysmal goalkeeping from Onana. Nemanja Matic's harsh claim that the Cameroonian is one of United's worst goalkeepers is strengthened by the Cameroonian's completely misjudged flight of the cross as he attempted to defend it. The manner of the goal rattled United but they managed to claw back an equaliser right at the end of the first half, Manuel Ugarte volleying towards goal and Yoro glancing his shot into the net. The Red Devils found their rhythm in the second half and Joshua Zirkzee headed in a Bruno Fernandes to give them a deserved lead.
The spotlight was on him after his needless war-of-words with Matic and it felt inevitable that he would make at least blunder. He ultimately produced two. It is now nine errors leading to a goal in less than two seasons. Simply insufficient. Leny Yoro: 8.5/10 Showed his class and why United paid £52m ($67m) to sign him. His thrilling run through the middle and headed goal in the second half demonstrated his forward prowess. Harry Maguire (5/10):
Pu himself under pressure in the first half with a couple of rash moments and didn't provide his usual aerial threat.
Noussair Mazraoui (7/10):
Defended with intelligence and diligence.
