Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President, has reacted to critics who have recently inquired about his whereabouts at a time when the country's economy appears to be in freefall.
Dr. Bawumia has been focusing on the administration's digitisation agenda in an effort to reduce waste, enhance efficiency, and eliminate corruption in the public sector for some time now, with little mention of Ghana's economic prospects.
Some, particularly his political opponents, have accused him of avoiding commenting on the economy during these trying times in favor of focusing on matters related to digitalisation and ICT.
But, speaking to students at a Jubilee House Agric boot camp on Monday, Dr. Bawumia reacted to the critics by explaining the intervention he is directing in the country.
Coming into government and leading the Economic Management Team, the President gave me the mandate and opportunity to focus on how best we can transform and modernise Ghana to ensure that some of the challenges, some of the risks that people who just want to operate in our economy face are mitigated, and how we make this economy an efficient economy, which is why I have focused on digitalisation," Dr. Bawumia said.
"Sometimes people say, 'We thought you were an economist, but you're doing so much in the IT field,'" he continued. Have you forgotten about economics? No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no In fact, I'm focusing on digitisation because of the economics, because without it, I won't be able to construct such things.
Meanwhile, Dr. Bawumia is scheduled to deliver a comprehensive statement about the country's economy next month, a speech that is expected to highlight the true state of the economy and the intervention the administration plans to deploy to save an economy that other economists have predicted is on the verge of collapsing.
