Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President, has emphasized the relevance of digital leadership to the success of organizations and the transformation of economies in the twenty-first century.

Dr. Bawumia, speaking to business leaders and captains of industry at the 6th Ghana CEO's Summit in Accra on Monday, stressed the importance of digital leadership in the twenty-first century for ensuring organizational success and, ultimately, making greater contributions to the government's digital economic transformation agenda.

As a result, he challenged industry executives to deliver effective and uncompromising digital leadership in their respective organizations.

"Effective leadership has traditionally been seen as a critical ingredient in organizational success. To be successful in these times, an organization's leaders must set the tone from the top and be willing to promote long-term digital projects in their operations,' Dr. Bawumia said at the Summit, which focused on the significance of digital leadership in economic transformation.

"It goes without saying that the introduction of technology, especially social media, has altered the way we do business." As a result, as business leaders, it's critical that you lead your companies through digital transformation using innovative and effective techniques."

Dr. Bawumia pointed out that, based on the government's experience, changing the status quo through digitization is met with strong opposition from existing interest groups, so business leaders should develop strong commitments, just as the government did, to be able to make the necessary transformation.

"As a government, we saw the need to alter our economy in this way (digitalization) early on, and while the initial phase of this transition, like any reforms, came with some significant costs, the advantages are now beginning to emerge. We must maintain our digital leadership by staying the course and investing in that direction."

We recognize that this is a lengthy process that will have a gradual adjustment that will necessitate a great deal of preparation and behavioral change, but I am certain that the end result will benefit all stakeholders, and that the pain will be proportionate to the gain.

"As a result, I'd want to challenge all of you here today, as business leaders, to make intentional efforts to apply digital leadership in the management of your enterprises, and to seek to complement the government's efforts in achieving this aim."

"To stay competitive, you must create a culture of digital transformation as leaders of your numerous organizations."

The Vice President went on to say that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals would need a coordinated effort from both the commercial and governmental sectors, and that these efforts must be backed up by digital leadership if they are to succeed.

He discussed with the CEOs the government's digital transformation and how digital investment is affecting people's lives and the economy, as well as how it will be the bedrock for future economic development, particularly in light of the current global economic challenges, which he claims are forcing countries to rethink and become less reliant on others.
