Several senior members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have expressed their support for John Boadu, the party's General Secretary, who is seeking re-election.

On Tuesday, May 31, 2022, what was supposed to be a media campaign kickoff morphed into extensive speeches by NPP veterans backing Mr. Boadu.

Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, the former Speaker of Parliament, Fred Oware, the former CEO of the Bui Power Authority, who is also supporting Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia's flagbearership campaign, and Freddie Blay, the National Chairman of the NPP, were also present at the event.

Professor Oquaye, who expressed overwhelming support, recalled how Mr. Boadu rescued the party from "crisis" before of the 2016 elections, when the national chairman and general secretary were suspended.

Due to the impending elections, it was a difficult decision to select a general secretary after the first vice-chairman was nominated to function, but "John Boadu was equal to the role," he emphasised.

Mr. Boadu, he claims, told him that they would triumph.

"'Chief, we'll do it,' he responded. From that day on, I've referred to him as my main guy."

He went on to say, "The man has been tried, tested, and proved." "He put forth a lot of effort and was cooperative. He was vivacious, obedient, and dedicated to the success of the party.

Most of the old guard's executives would not be part of the new team, according to the former legislator, and "if we don't have this tested and proven general secretary with us, then we want to play with our fortunes, which we are not going to do."

"I am certain. This man was extremely tall in an emergency. We're up against a new challenge: breaking the eight. With John Boadu as our General Secretary, I am confident that we will succeed."

Mr Blay, for one, believes that Mr Boadu "has become the party's nerve center." Everything revolves around him, and he made some of our jobs simpler, including mine as Chairman."

Mr Blay is certain that the General Secretary has the party's best interests at heart, and that "he (Mr Boadu) would be talking about the party even in his grave."

"2024 will be more essential than 2016," he remarked, "and as others have stated, we need someone who can be woken up in his sleep and talk about what is going on in the party."

Mr Oware was brief in his remarks, but he was adamant that Mr Boadu would not be replaced by the party.

"We need people who are familiar with the party, who have worked with the party's structures, constitution, and processes...  If we don't do that and instead opt for newcomers, they'll work with the party OK, but it will take a lot longer, and we won't have enough time to campaign in 2024," he said.

"If we recognize that what we need to do is win an election, then we need somebody with experience in 2024, and I agree with you that someone who has done it twice is more than qualified to do it a third time."

Mr Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wuntumi), the newly re-elected NPP Chairman for the Ashanti Region; Joe Ghartey, former Minister for Railways and NPP flagbearer-aspirant; and Mr Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wuntumi), former Minister for Railways and NPP flagbearer-aspirant; and Mr Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wuntumi)

Bernard Okoe Boye, former MP for Ledzokuku and recently appointed CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), and Lord Commey, Director of Operations at the President's Office, took turns delivering statements in support of Mr Boadu.

Oboshie Sai-Coffie, the President's Media Advisor; Divine Otoo Agorhom, the newly-retained Greater Accra Regional Chairman; Mohammed Samba, the Northern Regional Chairman; and Kate Gyamfuah, the National Women's Organiser, were among those who attended the event.

Nana Akomea, CEO of State Transport Company Limited; Afrifa Mensah, MP for Amasaman Constituency; Vincent Essifuah, MP for Old Tafo; Dominic Aduah, CEO of GNPC Foundation; Farouk Aliu Mahama, MP for Yendi; and Habib Iddrissu, Deputy Majority Chief Whip; were among the others.
