Barcelona has begun negotiations to sign a Brazilian defensive midfielder for €25 million
A new holding midfielder is one of Barcelona's top priorities in the summer transfer window.
With Sergio Busquets unlikely to stay beyond 2023, the club is looking for someone to serve as a deputy before eventually taking over as the club's first-choice number six.
Barcelona has been linked with a move for Ruben Neves, but according to Diario SPORT, they are also monitoring Danilo and have approached Palmeiras about signing him.
The 21-year-old is currently playing for Palmeiras and is one of the hottest prospects in South American football, having risen to prominence quickly in recent years.
His performances in the Brazilian top flight and the Copa Libertadores have been outstanding, and many expect him to move to Europe soon.
This is where Barcelona enters the picture. The Catalans are very interested in the youngster and have emerged as the undisputed favourites to sign him this summer.
Danilo is expected to cost between €20 and €25 million. Unlike Ruben Neves, who was considered a direct competitor for the veteran, the club is targeting him as a deputy for Busquets.
Danilo is eager to join Barca because he wants to be a part of Xavi's setup. If he does join Barcelona, he will serve as a backup for Busquets next season.
He will spend his first year learning Xavi's tactics before being groomed into a first-team player for the Spanish giants.
The Brazilian could be an excellent cost-effective alternative for Neves for a fee of €20-25 million. However, given his lack of European experience, Barcelona's pursuit of the youngster is fraught with danger.
It's anyone's guess whether Danilo will be able to overcome that barrier and live up to his expectations at Camp Nou.
