The Mr. Louie Platform in the Saltpond oil field is now officially being decommissioned by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).

The decommissioning project is expected to take a year to complete.

Being the first decommissioning project of its sort in Ghana, GNPC, the project's principal contractor, and other important parties demonstrated their willingness to collaborate to guarantee the project's success.

The bulk of the necessary legislative clearances and important permits have been received, and GNPC will offer both financial and technical support for the complete execution of the 12-month project.

The first oil platform in Ghana must be decommissioned, according to GNPC Chief Executive O.A. Danquah, in order to guarantee that the Saltpond area's marine ecology is restored to its pre-licensing status.

Working with other seasoned industry professionals during this exercise would help GNPC workers develop more practical technical skills, since many oil and gas installations are projected to be decommissioned in the future.

Mr. Danquah further said that the Ministry of Energy-approved feasibility study and pre-planning phases preceded the field decommissioning procedure.

"Although we are still working to achieve all technical and safety criteria, the company is also increasing its social licence to operate by regularly hosting stakeholder and community dialogues in the coastal villages where the project is being carried out. This is done to educate fishermen about the value of following safety precautions and avoiding the prohibited area.

Additionally, we have helped the traditional leaders carry out all prerequisite ceremonies so the project may begin. Danquah continued.

The Petroleum Commission, Ghana Maritime Authority, National Security, Environmental Protection Agency, and other significant stakeholders whose representatives were present at the kickoff were thanked by the Chief Executive Officer of GNPC for their assistance in making sure the project gets off to a successful start.

The Project for Decommissioning

The 1970-commissioned Mr. Louie Platform has reached the end of its useful life and is degrading.

The project will be completed turnkey thanks to an alliance of industry specialists led by Hans & Co. Limited, a company owned entirely by Ghanaians.

To guarantee that all phases of the decommissioning, including well plugging and abandonment and topside removal, are carried out with strict respect to Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental (HSSE) guidelines, the project will be supported by a project management consultant firm.
