The top three types of public officials who took the biggest cash bribes in 2021 were personnel of the Lands Commission, prosecutors, judges or magistrates, and immigration officers.

According to a poll performed by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice and the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) (CHRAJ). "2021 Ghana Integrity of Public Services Survey" is the name of the poll.

The Lands Commission personnel received the average largest cash bribe, totaling GHC1, 669, according to the study. Prosecutors, judges, or magistrates were next, receiving GHC1,208, while immigration officers received GHC950.

With these statistics, the research infers that "public officials with whom most residents have minimal daily interaction are paid the biggest average bribes."

Even though they are rarely paid, these huge bribes, according to the GSS and CHRAJ, "impact crucial choices by public authorities, which can have major economic or personal effects" (for instance, through influencing decisions about land, immigration, or prosecutors and judges).

The survey also revealed that the average amount of cash bribes given to police and medical personnel was lower.

It was emphasised that the public officials who often interact with the public get the majority of the smaller monetary bribes received.

The dynamics of smaller bribes, on the other hand, appear to be tied to public servants with whom people have more regular interaction (such as police officers, health care professionals, and public utility officials), as well as to bribes paid to avoid mild penalties or punishments, to retain electricity connections or to lower tax obligations," the report's conclusion stated.

The poll also found that bribes of around GH5 billion were paid in the public and private sectors.

It was revealed that 26.7 percent of public sector employees and 9.1 percent of private sector employees had committed acts of bribery.

According to the research, there is a high level of corruption inside the Ghana Police Service, said government statistician Professor Samuel Kobina Annim.

The Ghana Immigration Service and the Ghana Revenue Authority came in second and third, with 53.2 percent and 37.4 percent of corrupt cases, respectively, for the Police Service and the Ghana Revenue Authority, respectively.
