The Ghana Association of Registered Nurses and Midwives, Wassa East Chapter has named Mr. Nicholas Paa Kwasi Turkson as the Best Community Nurse in Wassa East District.
Mr Turkson, who was seconded to the district and subsequently assigned to Domama CHIP Compound in Ekutase Constituency, is the first nurse to form the Adolescent Health Club in the district which has helped reduce the number of teenage pregnancies in the catchment area. He also created a Reproductive Child Health (RCH) unit at the facility to ensure privacy and confidentiality.
Mr. Turkson again rewards mothers who complete their child care clinic schedule by holding a party at the end of each year to motivate other mothers.
Presenting the award at the 2022 mid-term performance review meeting organized by the Wassa East District Health Directorate in Daboase in the Western Region, the District Director of Health, Mr. Emmanuel Affelkum, said the district is proud of health workers who find innovative ways to solve problems with providing health.
At the mid-year review, Mr Affelkum said the review will provide the directorate with an opportunity to take stock by assessing their performance against the target set for the year as well as address challenges and progress towards the target.
He said the indicators based on the planned activities reviewed so far provide a clear picture of the work towards achieving the set target in all service areas and called on all service providers to refocus on ensuring the target is achieved, stressing that it will be followed through. through regular partial reviews as well as verification and monitoring of support visits.
In relation to the challenges raised in the presentations, the Director of Health said that despite the challenges and constraints, the directorate was able to achieve a slightly above average performance for the half year. He acknowledged that some challenges were beyond the capabilities of the directorate. Among some of the constraints, he mentioned accessibility, travel difficulties and unavailability of vehicles, among others.
He was quick to add that other local resources like motorbikes, tricycles are being used to administer health services in the farthest part of the district.
In response to questions about the recently discovered monkeypox and Marburg virus, Mr. Affelkum urges the public to be aware of any health conditions that are reported within the community by reporting to the nearest health facility, “where there is no facility, reports should be made to community health surveillance volunteers who will intend to report facilities where necessary steps should be taken to reduce any form of outbreak.”
There were presentations on improving data collection, managing referrals and improving reproductive and maternal health. The rest is disease control with an emphasis on covid-19 and prevention of iron deficiency anemia, code of conduct and maternal health issues.
