Centre-back In the lead-up to two of Germany's three goals during Monday's 3-3 draw with England, Maguire made blunders.

After being released earlier in the season by United, his selection and position in Gareth Southgate's starting lineup have been called into question.

Shaw said on BBC Radio 5 Live that Harry is "a fantastic player and an amazing character."

He has received a lot of criticism—likely more than I have ever seen in football.

He never runs away; he is constantly present. There are many who choose to remain anonymous and avoid the spotlight. He's constantly drawing attention to himself, which demonstrates his fortitude and integrity.

"Everyone is aware of his incredible talent as a player. Currently, he might not feel confident because he might think that everyone is against him.

Although we are all behind him because he is a crucial player, it is difficult for him. Because he participated in both games [this week], it demonstrates Gareth's confidence. Just look at what he accomplished at the Euros.

People must realize that he is an important member of the England team and accept this. Maguire's struggles with form for both club and country are nothing new; in March, following a challenging time at United, he was jeered during England's friendly victory over the Ivory Coast.

Police searched his home the following month after he received a bomb threat.

Maguire, the club captain, has made just three Premier League appearances this year and was jeered during preseason in Australia.

Nevertheless, despite the fact that Maguire's dedication has not been rewarded in this week's Nations League games, England manager Southgate has kept believing in him.

He received a player rating of 3.87 out of 10 on the BBC Sport Player Rater following the Three Lions' loss to Italy on Friday, which resulted in their elimination from their Nations League group.

After the Germany tie at Wembley, that number decreased to 2.58, despite the fact that Maguire had the support of a sizable portion of England supporters before his costly errors.

Feel for Harry... every mistake being punished and scrutinized - comes with the territory, though, tweeted former England and United defender Rio Ferdinand during the Germany encounter.

To go over this, one must have a strong mental attitude. At this level, playing without any games always leaves you vulnerable.

Following the Italy game, Maguire said: "I won't lie; I don't pay attention to the noise.

"I don't listen to the noise because I am the captain of Manchester United and because Manchester United is the most talked-about team in England.

"Since I haven't been playing, and I am a football player who hasn't had that in my career thus far, I can only suppose there are plenty.

"It's strange for me because I've always been a player who was available and played in starting XI's; I don't want to grow used to it. However, I must put in a lot of effort in my training to make sure I'm prepared for the opportunity.

Shaw has only made two Premier League appearances for Erik ten Hag's United so far this season, both of which came in August. Like Maguire, Shaw is not a regular starter for the team.

The 27-year-old played in both England matches this week despite dropping to the bench for his club, starting against Germany and entering as a late substitute against Italy.

England played their final game on Monday before the World Cup kicks up in November in Qatar.

It clearly demonstrates Gareth's confidence in me, Shaw added.

"However, I am aware from the perspective of my club that the first two games [this season] weren't up to par, and of course I am completely aware that the manager must make choices. Now that the squad has been successful, we must wait.

"I can only continue to cheer for the squad, put in my best effort, and wait for my chance. It will be more difficult for me to play if I keep my head down and don't care.

"I have to keep working hard, understand my circumstance, and it is up to me to keep working hard, keep training well, and ideally just wait for the opportunity."
