A few days after the kick-off of the World Cup in Qatar, criticism is increasing. Many European selections castigate the organization of this 2022 World Cup. In other news; Why Nunez could become Salah's best attacking partner at Liverpool
It was not an easy road for Darwin Nunez at the start of his time at Liverpool, but he is already becoming one of the most popular members of the team.
The 23-year-old has become an undisputed starter ahead of the World Cup and has nine goals since the start of the season – only Mohamed Salah has more.
Moreover, the two strikers seem to get along well and complement each other on the pitch, providing a double threat.
The Liverpool Echo has assessed the effectiveness of Salah's partnerships with fellow Liverpool forwards over the years, using the expected goals (xG) each partnership has generated together.
For example, Salah and Roberto Firmino together generated 0.169 xG per 90. This figure increases for Salah's partnerships with Diogo Jota (0.172), Xherdan Shaqiri and Sadio Mane (0.173 each), as well as Philippe Coutinho (0.178) and Daniel Sturridge (0.179).
By contrast, Salah and Nunez are off the charts, with 0.363 goals expected every 90 minutes, more than double any previous pairing.
Of course, the sample is really small: they only played 801 minutes together, less than nine full 90-minute matches. Nonetheless, it bodes well for both players in the future.
