A contract extension has been discussed between the club and the attacker, but nothing has been agreed upon yet. His agreement was up on December 17.

Prior to the 2019–2020 Ghana Premier League, Barnieh was signed to a three-year contract on January 15, 2020. On January 19, 2020, he made his professional debut in a 2-1 away victory over Liberty Professionals.

In addition to the MTN FA Cup twice in a row, the attacker assisted the Phobians in winning the Ghana Premier League title two years ago.

According to Opare Addo on Happy FM, which Football Ghana was listening to, "authorities had met with Afriyie Barnieh regarding his contract concerns for a very long period."

The player has assured the club that he would sign the contract extension, and as a result, we are eagerly waiting for him to do so.

We have always spoken with Barnieh's agent and the player directly, and each time we have received the same guarantee, we can only hope that it will come true.

Amankwah Mireku called Fatawu Mohammed's remarks on Afriyie Barnieh's contract status regrettable.

Amankwah Mireku, a former Accra Heart of Oak player, criticized departing captain Fatawu Mohammed for his remarks on Daniel Afriyie Barnieh's contract predicament.

After his contract with the Phobians expired on December 17, Barnieh did not renew it.

Afriyie Barnieh's teammate Fatawu Mohammed said in an interview with Sports Obama TV that God would never pardon him if he ever suggested to his friend to remain with the club. The two played together at the Accra-based club.

"I won't suggest that Afriyie stay at Hearts of Oak. God will even punish me for it; even if Afriyie is my son, I won't encourage him to remain. God won't even pardon me "According to Sports Obama TV on YouTube, Fatawu Mohammed.

Amankwah Mireku responded to Fatawu's remarks by calling them regrettable.

"I have no idea why Fatawu said that, but you said that God would never pardon you if you had ever suggested that Barnieh remain with the club. Please tell me that you are Afriyie Barnieh, the one who gave birth to him. Do you know how he arrived in Hearts of Oak? If not, are you the one who brought him there? I've been saying this for a while now—it appears to be Hearts of Oak—but I have no idea who really signs our players "He informed Peace FM.

"It is regrettable that they are not performing their duties well. Who was responsible for ensuring that Afriyie Barnieh's contract was extended and how that should happen? We've got players that appeared out of nowhere for about ten years now, and, forgive me, if Hearts were granted them, they wouldn't like them. The team that assisted him is not greater than him, the team hasn't done anything for him, and the team is nothing. From nothing, they had the largest platform in Ghana and by the grace of God they are now widely recognized."

"When we were at the national camp, several of our teammates would implore us, "If I had the chance, I'd play for Hearts. Please give me a chance." But it is awful that a player may now join Hearts and play for them before quitting and expecting Hearts to grovel for him. It is terrible and regrettable that a player can make these claims about a team that players desire to play and that has produced players like Polo, Adolf Amarh, Offei Ansah, and Amankwah Mireku, all of whom have retired."
