LIVELIHOODS SHOULDN'T BE IMPACTED BY THE ECONOMY RECOVERING, SAYS BOKPIN

Government measures to handle the present economic crisis shouldn't harm citizens, according to finance professor Godfred Bokpin.

Even while there is a need to improve the terrible economic condition, the speaker says that it must be done carefully.

Speaking on The Probe on Sunday, he cautioned that any measures taken by the government to ease the financial crisis must not harm people or the business sector.

"Ghana is going through a really tough moment right now. We feel for the people of Ghana.

Although we agree with the government that it is important to regain macroeconomic stability, we must be careful to avoid doing so at the expense of the private sector and households, which may suffer irreversible harm. Only the government is open to appeal, he added.

The government's proposed domestic debt swap scheme, which has drawn criticism for its stringent conditions, was a factor in Professor Bokpin's decision.

Bondholders and the general public have so far reacted angrily to the policy, which was unveiled in December of last year.

Disgruntled residents claim that the scheme would prevent them from reaping the rewards of their bond investments, which is why they are resisting it.

Gabby Otchere-Darko, a prominent figure in the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), asked bondholders to support the government's plan in a series of tweets on Sunday.

He claimed that if the initiative doesn't succeed, the economy would continue to deteriorate.

He urged public support for the initiative but expressed sympathy for bondholders due to the negative effects of the strategy.

Senyo Hosi, the convener of the Individual Bondholders Forum, has stated that his group will continue to firmly oppose the planned debt swap scheme. He feels that the policy is uncaring.

He underlined his concerns about the divisive plan in remarks made on The Probe on Sunday.

He responded to Gabby Otchere-previous Darko's tweets by saying that the NPP leader was spreading terror with his comments.
