In the NDC's parliamentary primary in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, a former vice president of the student government at the University of Ghana is optimistic about defeating actor John Dumelo.
The former student leader, Moses Baafi Acheampong, told MyJoyOnline.com shortly after announcing his desire to run in the parliamentary primary elections on Monday that he has been pursuing the goal since his time as a student activist.
The lawyer/pharmacist claims that despite the New Patriotic Party's "hegemony," he is dissatisfied with the vast development deficit in the constituency (NPP).
He claimed that despite the NPP having had the seat for a long time, there has been no overall visible improvement or growth.
To reverse this perception, the well-known politician known as "MBA" threatened to defeat actor John Dumelo in the forthcoming primaries so that he could seize the seat from Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the current member of parliament.
"I have been attending school in this area for years, so I am well-versed in events that take place here.
The lawyer emphasised, "Look, let me tell you, the NPP has taken the residents of this constituency for granted, and this is something I have never been happy about; a tale I truly want to alter.
But as you can see, first things first before doing this, he continued. At a time, only one item. I am currently concentrating on the primaries.
I've heard that John Dumelo would return, so I have to stop him right away. Yes, I'll win the competition, and then we can go on.
He gave the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency Executive credit for his optimism by stating that they are highly resourceful and that as a result of his encounters with them, he is optimistic about their full collaboration.
Mr. Baafi Acheampong enters the race with his background as a lawyer and a student activist, which during his time as the Vice President of the Student Representative Council at the University of Ghana resulted in a number of significant advancements in the welfare of students.
The lawyer said he had what it takes to mobilise students to vote for the NDC and dispel the myth that the party is unattractive to young people after serving the student population and confirming his acquaintance with the University of Ghana electoral dynamics.
In the meantime, some backers of John Dumelo, the NDC's 2020 parliamentary candidate in the constituency, have made fun of Mr. Baafi Acheampong's chances in the future election.
Since MBA is too young and inexperienced to compete in the NPP-dominated constituency, they claim that the award-winning actor is the NDC's greatest chance of annexing the Ayawaso West Wuogon West.
It's uncertain, though, if Mr. Dumelo would run for reelection.
Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC's general secretary, made this declaration on January 18, 2023, in the party's Accra headquarters.
The party states that parliamentary candidates must choose a form at a cost of GH $5,000 and pay a nonrefundable filing fee of GH 40,000.
Forms for presidential candidates cost GH30,000.00, and a filing fee of GH500,000.00 is not refundable.
According to the NDC General Secretary, the nomination period will be open from February 22 until February 24, 2023.
The filing fee for women and those with disabilities has been cut in half.
Form submission and filing are scheduled for March 20–22, 2023.
Additionally, vetting is planned to take place from March 27 to March 29, 2023.
