One of the four maternal fatalities that were reported in the Ledzokuku Municipality in 2022 included a pregnant lady who went to a prayer camp out of dread of a Caesarean Section (CS) but subsequently passed away in childbirth.

The Ledzokuku Municipal Director of Health Services, Madam Jacqueline Sfarijlani, stated that all four cases were mostly brought on by pregnancy anaemia, delayed reporting to medical facilities, and use of prayer camps and healing facilities owing to anxiety over C-sections (CS).

She explained: "When a woman delivers at 36 weeks and her haemoglobin level is under 11, it is a danger factor since haemorrhage is one of the causes of maternal death" (bleeding during the delivery process).

She explained, adding that pregnant women frequently arrived at the facilities late, "so if her HP is low and care is not done or no intervention, we may lose her. That is one of the occurrences in Greater Accra and the Ledzokuku Municipality as well.

The Directorate noted six maternal fatalities in 2021.

The Municipal Health Director cited the fear of CS as a serious issue and urged all interested parties to work together to debunk the service.

This was said by Madam Sfarijlani during an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during the Ledzokuku Municipal Health Directorate's 2022 Annual Performance Review meeting held at Teshie.

Bridging Healthcare Delivery Gaps for Equity in Health Coverage By Intensifying Health Promotion" was the subject.

enhancing preventative and control measures for emergent and re-emerging public health crises, and optimising the use of data and technology to promote access to high-quality healthcare.

The purpose of the discussion was to examine obstacles, successes, and best practices for expanding access to healthcare while evaluating the work done by health institutions in the municipality over the preceding year in light of the goals of the Ghana Health Service.

Key interventions, according to Madam Sfarijlani, for 2023 would include a diet and a campaign to educate pregnant women about CS.

The Directorate, according to her, is attempting to lessen anaemia during pregnancy.

Several efforts have been made to lower maternal mortality, and we wish to increase the effectiveness of our prenatal education programmes by relocating them from institutions to communities  As we get to know them more, we will discuss the interventions with them and make sure their iron folate is regularly fortified to raise the blood iron levels.

Mr Charles Banafo, the Administrator at the LEKMA Hospital, noted a drop in prenatal care services that had resulted in maternal problems during birth when outlining the health care coverage provided by the various institutions in the Municipality.

In his words, "If you are pregnant, it is not an illness. But, you need to come for prenatal services during the first trimester for us to see that everything is well.

He urged everyone, especially spouses and family members, to dedicate themselves to the security and welfare of expectant mothers.
