Ruth Amoh, the vice chairperson of the Greater Accra ENT Nurses Association, has advised people to quit sticking anything, particularly bird feathers, in their ears when they are itchy.

She said that doing so damages the eardrum and might ultimately impair a customer's ability to hear.

Ruth Amoh noticed that many people attempt to clean their ears or get relief from ear irritation by inserting bird feathers, cotton buds, sticks, and occasionally even keys.

As part of the celebration of "International Hearing Day," Ruth Amoh noted on Atinka TV's morning program Ghana Nie with Abena Dufie that certain activities are unhealthy and that the ear has a method of self-cleansing.

She pointed out that many people have unintentionally ruptured their eardrums by pushing things into their ears, which has impaired their hearing.

The ear has a unique method of self-cleaning. The dirt gets stuck inside the ear because certain cells in the ear are responsible for bringing it out; as a result, when people insert objects in their ears, the cell is diverted from its task and ceases to function as it should. The more cotton buds are inserted into the ear, the more dirt is pushed inside, the expert explained.

"If we can, we should quit using the feathers in our ears," she said. I won't urge someone to put it in their ear since that's wrong, but if we can't, we need to wash it really thoroughly before taking it.

In addition, she said that many people's hearing capacities had been harmed by listening to loud music and frequently using earpieces.

When people's ears itched or felt filthy, she advised them to apply olive oil instead.

If they couldn't, she suggested they contact an ENT expert for ear washing or cleansing and discouraged them from self-medicating.

"You can pour olive oil inside your ear to relieve itching; do not use feathers to achieve this." Some of them are even drops that you can squeeze into your ears when you pour them into a tiny container, then pour them into one ear, wait a little while, and then switch to the other," she explained.
