According to Dominic Nitiwul, minister of defense, police take tremendous pleasure in their uniforms and expect the people they serve to treat them with courtesy.
His comments follow military excesses in Ashaiman early on Tuesday, which were in response to the purported Saturday murder of a young soldier named Imoru Sheriff by a crowd in Ashaiman Taifa.
Several troops are accused of flying over the Ashaiman neighborhood in helicopters and wreaking havoc on some of the residents.
At a joint news conference with members of the Defence and Interior Committees of Parliament, the defence minister said that instances like this one happen when the country starts to take shape.
"We are building a nation, and we will experience some of these sad events. I shall continue to urge Ghanaians to show great respect for those in uniform. We can all benefit from it, he hinted.
Kennedy Agyapong, the committee's chairman, had already announced that the military high command, the defense ministry, and committee members had decided to travel to Ashaiman to learn the actual circumstances surrounding the event.
"I will not speak until the committee has gone on Thursday to see the location and determine for ourselves the facts," the minister declared.
Mr. Nitiwul clarified that the fact that the inquiry was still underway and they did not want to jeopardize it was one of the reasons they had delayed coming there.
For us to all work together to guarantee that this challenging issue is brought under control, he said, "that is why we have requested our colleagues to tone down on their utterances.
The head of the committee sent condolences to the dead family and those who were harmed unintentionally by the military's beatings on behalf of his colleagues.
According to Mr. Agyapong, who said, "I heard some of them were in their various homes and were taken out to be caned," some of the people got swept up in the excitement.
"We can all agree that there were excesses since we are all human, thus we sympathise with the residents of Ashaiman and the Ghana Military Forces for their young men using the law to murder the young soldier.
"In circumstances like this, all we can say is that peace is necessary. The NPP MP for Assin Central, Mr. Agyapong, asserted, "We as members of the committee cannot incite enmity by coming there to make remarks that may enrage a faction.
Our goal is to ensure that this nation is at peace, he continued. We have all denounced the tragic situation that occurred, and the Minister has apologized on behalf of the military.
They freely acknowledge that there were excesses. We won't make a statement on the House floor until we visit the location and speak with the people who were impacted and hear their side of the story, the speaker said.
