The Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, has declared that a high-level education forum will be held soon to come up with practical solutions to the declining standard of education at the basic and senior high levels in the Upper East Region.

He emphasized that "the area has consistently achieved appalling scores in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) on an annual basis."

Last Monday, he made the announcement while speaking at the 66th independence anniversary parade in Bolgatanga at Ramsey Park. He said, "Unfortunately, the state of education in the region leaves much to be desired."

The current status of schooling in the area, he claimed, was due to a number of causes, including tardiness and absenteeism due, among other things, to inadequate supervision, parental negligence, and teachers' involvement.

“I am happy to announce that in the next few days, a high-level education forum will be organized to draw participants from key stakeholders, including traditional rulers, retired and current directors of education, civil society organizations (CSOs), and non-governmental organizations (NGOs),” he said.

In order to zealously guard the future of the students in the area, he pleaded with people and organizations who might not have had the chance to be represented at the forum to submit memoranda to the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) on the best course of action.

He said that, "in awareness of this difficulty, the RCC has established a committee focused on addressing the subpar educational standards in the locale.

Indiscipline

"We cannot continue to allow students to be undisciplined in school, which often leads to the destruction of school property," he said, referring to the prevalence of indiscipline in which pupils ignore school rules and regulations with impunity.

"The most crucial quality that a kid must possess in order to thrive academically is discipline." "Without discipline, no pupil can excel in their academic endeavors," he stated.

Mr. Yakubu emphasized that "it is against this background that the government has established regional offices of the Technical and Vocational Education," noting that "for Ghana to catch up with the likes of Malaysia and Singapore, the issue of technical and vocational education must be taken seriously."

He challenged the students at these institutions to think creatively, to be inventive, and to develop inexpensive tools and other devices that may help the nation handle some of its problems.

For his part, Bright A. Lawoe, regional director of the Ghana Education Service, pleaded with child rights organizations to go hand in hand with their advocacy on children's rights in order to ensure the holistic development of schoolchildren.

As part of the ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of Endswell Pharmacy, Lawrence Atongo; Lee Eun Mi of the Evergreen Preparatory School, the Executive Secretary of the Ghana Hajj Board, Alhaji Farouk and the Municipal Chief Executive for Bolgatanga, Rex Asanga, were each presented with citations for their immense contributions
