For a week long examination of Ghana's automotive eco-system, a group of 18 car component makers from automotive manufacturing nations are in the nation looking to set up factories there.
The group, which is the fifth of its kind to visit Ghana, was invited by Volkswagen. They are looking for opportunities to open plants in Ghana and are from countries including Germany, Mexico, South Africa, and India.
This was revealed by Volkswagen's Group Communications Director, Andile Dlamini, yesterday during a courtesy visit by a Volkswagen delegation to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House in Accra.
Members of the group were in the nation for the launch of the Volkswagen Group South Africa, and Martina Biene served as their leader.
The new plant, which has an installed capacity of 5,000 units annually, will build the Volkswagen T-Cross, Tiguan, Amarok, and Virtus models, generating 80 jobs, including those for regional third-party service providers.
By adding the facility, the nation joins South Africa, which is home to the company's largest assembly factory, Kenya, and Rwanda as the fourth country in sub-Saharan Africa to assemble VW vehicles.
Investors
Speaking more briefly about the involvement of component manufacturers, Mr. Dlamini said investors had been speaking with assemblers, dealers, governmental agencies, and infrastructure administrators just to get a sense of the ecosystem.
He continued, "We are interested in making investments in Ghana, and we fully support the policy that will be put in place. We have faith in Ghana and consider it to be the centre of Africa.
Showcase
For her part, Ms. Martina Biene said the facility's opening last Thursday in Tema was to demonstrate the organization's commitment to the journey that began in 2018. She also noted that the plant marked the beginning of the automotive industry in Africa.
Policy
She praised the automotive strategy in Ghana as "perhaps the most progressive and the most well-thought- out which might also make Ghana, the West African hub of the automotive industry".
She promised that the business would remain and finish the excellent journey with Ghana.
