Marie Claire Rupio, the late Christian Atsu's wife, states that although it tears her heart to lose her husband, she still loves him in death.
Following a catastrophic earthquake that rocked Türkiye on February 6, 2023, Christian Atsu was discovered dead in the wreckage of his flat on February 18, 2023.
Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, other government officials, and the family received his body at the Kotoka International Airport after it was flown to Ghana by Turkish Airlines.
According to her, a piece of her went with her husband, so he did not depart (die) alone.
In a touching homage, Madam Rupio remarked, "In life, I love you sincerely, and in death I do the same.
Even if she couldn't see him, she claimed that Atsu's love was still her compass and that he was constantly at her side.
Atsu was characterised by Marie Claire Rupio as a guy who was full of life and appeared to be immortal.
She lamented, "Your love, your grin. I see you in our kids' smiles," she continued, adding, "You are loved beyond words and mourned beyond measure, but as you always say, God wins.
We missed you Dad, You loved us for who we were and accepted us for who we were aspiring to become, the kids said in a homage to their father.
While you are in paradise, we know that you will still protect us, they said. "Your power provided us a sense of safety and love," they said.
Atsu started playing for Porto at the international level and spent a season on loan at Rio Ave. He was acquired by Chelsea Football Club in 2013, and since then, he has been on loan to Vitesse Arnhem, Everton, AFC Bournemouth, and Malaga.
He signed a permanent switch to Newcastle United in May 2017 after spending the 2016–17 season there on loan.
Once his four-year contract expired, Atsu played for AL Raed in Saudi Arabia and Hatayspor in Turkey, where he tragically perished in an earthquake.
From 2012 until 2019, Atsu earned 65 caps, and he represented Ghana in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Also, he took part in four African Cup of Nations competitions.
In addition to winning player of the tournament and goal of the tournament honours in the 2015 African Cup of Nations, he also assisted the squad in finishing as runners-up.
In 65 games for the Ghanaian Black Stars, Atsu scored 10 goals and provided nine assists.
He has two sons, Joshua Christian Twasam and Godwin Twasam, as well as a daughter, Abigail Twasam, thanks to his marriage to German Marie Claire Rupio.
Atsu's last burial rituals were performed in the Accra State House's courtyard.
The 31-year-remains old's was put to rest at the State House before being transported to his birthplace of Dogobome, Ada, where he was buried.
He was well recognised for his charitable efforts and love of all people.
