Professor Ernest Aryeetey, a former vice-chancellor chancellor of the University of Ghana (UG), has urged the government to give senior high schools (SHSs) a degree of autonomy to help advance education in the nation.

He said that with such freedom, the schools would be able to administer academic programs, raise finances to supplement government education funding, and better safeguard their assets.

Prof. Aryeetey said Achimota School, for instance, couldthe capacity to mobilize enough resources from parents and the commercial sector to assist improve the school when given the authority to do so. He was speaking during the 96th Founders' Day of Achimota School in Accra on Saturday.

The Old Achimotans Association (OAA), he noted, "has spearheaded the development of an Alumni Council that brings the leadership of roughly 40 schools together to campaign for such recognition for their institutions. Many additional schools mayare many additional schools that may benefit from such an effort.

"Achimota School and the Empowering of Generations: The First 96 Years" was the topic of the 96th Founders' Day.

Several of the school's former and present students, as well as representatives from other countries, participated.

Among the event's highlights were student cultural performances that represented the main ethnic groups in the nation and tributes to the school's founders, Drs. James Kwegyir Aggrey, Frederick Gordon Guggisberg, and Reverend Alexander Garden Fraser.

Zero elitism

Prof. Aryeetey, who was formerly an Achimota School student, believed that giving schools, especially those considered as elite institutions, autonomy or independence would prevent the emergence of elitism.

Instead, he claimed, it would be a chance for the schools to be creative and discover ways to grow personally to better their services to the nation.

He used the example of Achimota School, a model educational facility established by the colonial administration in 1927 with an independent and autonomous governing bodytoo produce generations of leaders in all domains.

If correctly implemented, the proposal for an autonomous SHS won't result in elitism, as the colonial authority had intended. Instead, it will cultivate and produce leaders from all walks of life who will change our country for the next century.

We acknowledge that in order orderorder for Achimota School to be successful in transforming lives and empowering generations, it must be free to mobilize the resources needed for that to happen, he said.

The proposal made by Prof. Aryeetey follows a flurry of requests made to the government by interest groups, well-known individuals, and civil society organizations to end the government's blanket-freefree SHS policy.
