According to former president John Dramani Mahama, the nation needs an experienced leader like him to get it out of the current economic rut it has found itself in and improve the situation of the average Ghanaian.
He said that he made the choice to ask Ghanaians for their support at this time in order to move the country forward and instill optimism, particularly among the youth of the nation, many of whom had little hope for the future under the existing regime.
This was spoken by Mr. Mahama, who is running to head the NDC in the 2024 general election, to the throngs of party members present, including representatives from the Gomoa East Constituency in the Central Region. in Gomoa Buduatta, the starting point of his three-day visit to the Central Region.
The former President, who through the NDC's screening and voting procedure, is listed first on the ballot for the party's presidential primary on May 13.
Kojo Bonsu, a former chief executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Council, and Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, a former minister of finance and governor of the Bank of Ghana, would be Mr. Mahama's rivals for the party's flagbearership. They are listed second and third on the ballot, respectively.

Last Tuesday, Mr. Mahama spoke to a cheering crowd at the Gomoa Buduatta Community Center and claimed the nation was in such an economic and governance shambles that more than any other Time need an expert to save the country from economic disaster.
He said that the time had passed when anybody else could be granted the authority to run the nation, adding that the awful situation—in which the populace was constantly weeping and finding life so challenging—did not permit any further experimenting.
He expressed regret that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo misled the people with catchy phrases like "one district, one factory," "one village, one dam," "one constituency, one million dollars," etc., all of which turned out to be unfulfilled empty promises.
