Salormey Gyamea, a widowed mother of five, was awarded a brand-new one-bedroom home at the second annual "Taking the Homeless Home Awards," a programme of the Joberg Foundation.
Ms. Gyamea, a baker who formerly resided in a run-down wooden building in Nsawam, moved into her new residence last Friday after being given the keys to the house in Katamanso, close to Ashaiman, in the Greater Accra Region.
She received a house as well as an unknown quantity of money to launch a company at her new home.
Scheme
The "Bringing the Homeless Home Awards" are put on by the Joberg Foundation, an NGO and charitable arm of the building firm Joberg Ghana Ltd, in collaboration with the online news source Mypagegh.com.
The programme aims to provide free housing to homeless, underprivileged, and hard-working individuals.
After a thorough evaluation procedure by the Board of Directors of the Joberg Foundation and the general public, Ms. Gyamea was selected as the winner from among the five finalists.
At the ceremony, the foundation also gave monetary rewards to the other four individuals who made the short list.
Helen Kalayi, a small-time merchant who once resided in a kiosk with her four children, won the inaugural competition.
Presentation
Dr. Mokowa Blay Adu-Gyamfi, a board member of the Joberg Foundation and Presidential Advisor on HIV/AIDS, remarked during the occasion that the gesture was a part of the foundation's efforts to help the weaker members of society.
The foundation has taken it upon itself to offer good housing to the poor and disadvantaged because "we are devoted to the socio-economic, physical, and mental wellness of our community," he added.
Victor Smith, a former Ghana High Commissioner to the UK, and Kwame Tenkorang, a former Ambassador to Japan, both members of the foundation's board, also attended the presenting event.

Joberg Construction Company and the foundation's CEO, Joseph Magnus Marteye, stated that his organisation was dedicated to aiding individuals in need.
He remarked, "This is our modest way of giving back to the community and to make vulnerable, hardworking, homeless Ghanaians happy."
Appreciation
Ms. Gyamea cried as she thanked God and the Joberg Foundation for the kindness, stating that she had never pictured herself living in "such a magnificent house" in the future.
She bowed her head in her new house and prayed for God to bless the Joberg Foundation.
