For their efforts at the just-completed Altitude Model United Nations Conference, 2023, in New York, USA, seven Ghanaian Senior High School (SHS) students have been recognized with prizes.
Five of the seven winners earned the Best Improvement Award during the conference, while two won the Secretary-General's Award.
The Secretary General's Award went to Robert C. Arthur from Adisadel College and Selorm K. Kumodor from Presbyterian Boys, Legon (Presec), both of whom were China's representatives.
The conference's Best Improvement Award was given to Williet Kofie, a delegate from China from Wesley Girls; Obaapa Nyamekye and Lois Ashong Mettle, both from Iran from Christian High; Noella Ayesu and Nana Ama Yeboah, both from Croatia from Achimota Senior High and Legacy Girls' Senior High School, respectively.
The seven kids attended the Altitude Model United Nations Conference 2023 with a group of 29 Ghanaian pupils.
According to UN protocol, they were given nations to represent at the conference, and throughout the committee meetings, they discussed numerous issues.
The delegates attended meetings of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee of the UN General Assembly.
This allowed them to discuss their thoughts and solutions to important challenges, including food shortages, climate change and the energy crisis, cyber safety in the Metaverse, and the social, humanitarian, and cultural repercussions of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Meeting other delegates from across the world has been interesting and educational, and talking with diplomats and high-profile figures was a tremendous motivation, said Selorm K. Kumodor, a participating delegate from Presec, in an interview.
The children were a part of the delegation from Life-Link Friendship Schools, which established Ghana's first model UN conferences.
One of the numerous worldwide Model UN conferences in which Life-Link Friendship Schools has taken part over the past 20 years is the 2023 Altitude Model United Nations Conference.
Ernest Gyimah-Danquah, the executive director of Life-Link Friendship Schools, spoke about the prizes and said the event was part of attempts to introduce young Ghanaian students to diplomacy at the level of the United Nations and to hone their public speaking and debating abilities while at the same time networking in the USA with other students from all backgrounds.
These senior high schools included Presbyterian Boys Senior High, Legon, Achimota High, Mfansipim High, Wesley Girls High, Adisadel College, Christian High, St Augustine's High, Aggrey Memorial High, Legacy Girls College, St Peter's, St Rose's, and Accra Academy Senior High School among others.
The United Nations Headquarters, Ghana's High Commission in New York, Rockefeller Center, the Statue of Liberty, and Times Square were all visited by participants as part of their activities.
