To increase the delivery of national meteorological and climate services, the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has added 249 additional personnel to its district and regional offices around the nation.

There are 81 women and 168 men in the group; 120 of the 147 people recruited from the original 147 were participants in the organization's Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) program.

As permanent meteorologists, assistant meteorologists, meteorologist technicians, and support services workers, the new hires have been hired.

The agency now employs 556 people as a result of their hiring.

Before their deployment, they underwent training and orientation to prepare them to perform tasks including data collection and processing, analysis, and weather forecasting, among others.

These were used to round off the GMET meteorological awareness creation month by honoring World Meteorological Day festivities at a gathering in Accra.

The purpose of the awareness month, which had the theme "The Future of Weather, Climate, and Water Across Generations," was to raise awareness of the agency's climate services while also highlighting the importance of meteorology in the economy, disaster management, and early preparedness.

Government's dedication

The recruitment of 249 staff members by GMET, according to Minister of Communications and Digitalization Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, demonstrates the government's dedication to providing the organization with the tools it needs to carry out its job.

She said that as a specialized institution, GMET was impacted by the severe personnel shortage.

She said that among the interventions made by the government on behalf of the organization was the amending of the GMET formation act, Act 682 (2004), which widened the makeup of the GMET Governing Board and outlined sustainable sources of finance for the agency's activities.

She said that in addition to 15 operating cars, calibration equipment, and a message-switching system, the government has acquired for the agency 15 operational vehicles.

To increase the number of stations in GMET's nationwide network, she added, "Several additional automated weather stations have been constructed with government funding."

According to Ms Owusu-Ekuful, the ministry would keep giving the agency the necessary operational assistance and direction to make sure it was well-positioned to contribute to the delivery of climate and weather services.

The significance of meteorological and climate information, according to GMET Board Chairman George Amoo, cannot be overstated.

In industries where weather services are particularly important, such as agriculture, health, construction, energy, insurance, telecommunications, tourism, aviation, logistics, and water supply, he added, "We need these investments today for a return shortly."
