The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications has advised MTN, Airtel, and Vodafone customers to finish the subscriber identity module (SIM) card registration process using their Ghana cards by April 17, 2023, to prevent permanently losing their phone numbers.
The National Communications Authority (NCA) ordered mobile network operators (MNOs) to deactivate, delink, and remove all SIM cards that had not been fully re-registered from all databases by today. According to the chamber, which represents service providers, this was done to avoid any inconveniences.
It stated that the MNOs expected to completely comply with the NCA's decision because they had already begun restricting services for users as of last November.
We advise all devoted network users who have not yet finished the registration procedure to do so immediately to prevent them from being denied access to voice, data, USSD, and mobile money services. Subscribers who have Ghana cards can escape this hassle, according to Dr. Ken Ashigbey, the chamber's CEO, in an interview with the Daily Graphic.
As of last February 9, 25,150,522 of the 42.5 million SIM cards that were initially registered, according to information from the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization (MoCAD), had been successfully registered in Ghana.
Over 33.8 million customers, or 79.60%, had only finished the first phase of attaching their Ghana cards to their SIM cards, while 8,658,164 members, or 20.40%, had not yet done so.
The purpose of the interview was to clarify a statement made by the chamber that described the people who would be impacted as a result of the MNOs following the NCA mandate.
The NCA stated on Thursday that as of today, April 17, 2023, all disconnected SIMs must be delinked from all databases.
Affected SIMs include those that were barred in November 2022 for failing to complete the SIM registration process in its entirety.
Also, any SIM cards registered after the individual cap of 10 must be delinked, disabled, and deleted today from all databases.
