Ghana has been asked by the WHO to address the unequal distribution of human resources in the nation's health system.
According to the WHO, the deployment of workers throughout the regions, rather than just Accra and Kumasi, should take into account its requirements on the health worker/population ratio.
It claimed that a significant impediment to achieving universal health was the ongoing disparities in the distribution of health professionals.
On Friday in Accra, during World Health Day celebrations and the beginning of a year-long celebration to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the WHO, Dr. Francis Kasolo, WHO Representative in Ghana, made the call.
On April 7, 2023, the WHO celebrated its 75th anniversary under the banner of "Health for Everyone."
Soon after gaining independence, Ghana joined the organization and has actively participated in shaping the global health agenda for the past 65 years.
Challenges
The COVID-19 pandemic, according to Dr. Kasolo, has disturbed health systems, economies, and cultures, which has hampered progress towards the fulfillment of the health-related Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3 on health and well-being.
A confluence of crises, including armed conflicts around the world, emerging pandemics of non-communicable diseases with accompanying increases in treatment-related costs, the spread of antibiotic resistance and drug-resistant pathogens, as well as the impact of climate change on health, were also mentioned as having hampered progress in the industry.
