Following reports that a toilet facility was being converted into a dormitory to house some students of the school, a fact-finding mission, led by the Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in charge of Management Services, Stephen Kwaku Owusu, visited the Ghana Senior High School (GHANASCO) in Tamale yesterday.

The purpose of the visit was to evaluate the lodging situation and learn firsthand the truth about a rumor that a bathroom cubicle was being used as a dormitory.

Over the weekend, a video that showed pupils dozing off in bathroom stalls went viral, sparking outrage on social media and prompting questions about the students' safety and wellbeing.

Investigations

After the event, the GES last Sunday ordered the school's headmaster and senior housemaster to resign so that an inquiry into the situation could be conducted.

The GES reacted with amazement at the allegation and stated in a statement that it was inappropriate for pupils to sleep in such a location.

It claimed that the school has enough space to accommodate an additional 300 pupils despite only 1,467 of the 1,790 open spots being filled.

The Northern Regional Director of Education was further instructed to look into the situation and report back in two weeks.

The school, which is located in Kukuo, a neighborhood of Tamale City, is not completely gated, which causes some persons to trespass on the campus every day with impunity, increasing the level of insecurity there.

The group spoke with the school's staff members and kids while they were there. Also, they evaluated the amenities in the dorms and the aforementioned bathroom that some kids allegedly resided in.

Due to the school's current transitory track structure, The Daily Graphic noted that a lot of the dorms were vacant. Some of the dorms are not entirely occupied, while others are just partially occupied.

For instance, a recently built GETFund dormitory complex with space for roughly 800 students is now underutilized.

In addition, it was discovered that, contrary to what was said in the film, the aforementioned lavatory facility was incomplete and had never been used.

Nevertheless, several chop boxes, beds, books, and other student personal property were discovered in the facility's cubicles.

denying assertions

The school's administration has, in the meantime, denied rumors that some pupils were sleeping in bathroom stalls.
