Sea waves are encircling Moree in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamakese District of the Central Region.

Last Sunday, a portion of a 15-room beachfront house was washed away by the water, forcing 15 people to find new housing.

The possibility of being wiped away extends to three further residences that house several individuals.

Kakra Boison, an assemblyman for Moree Old Court Yard Electoral Area, claims he has issued a "save our souls" request for attention and support to aid in preserving the historic seaside settlement.

He made it clear that they urgently needed the government, as well as other interested parties and organizations, to step in and assist them.

"We tried to block the sea invasion with sandbags, but the sea was stronger than them." "It's coming, and we need to act quickly to lessen its impact on the populace," he said.

Hannah Bentum, a victim of the ravaging sea waves, and her five children are temporarily sleeping with relatives on another side of the house, which is still perilously exposed and potentially unstable.

She stated to the Daily Graphic that she would be grateful for relocation assistance.

NADMO

Semaila Kabore, the district director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), stated that the disaster was caused by the sea's activity in expanding its bounds.

He said, "This has been gradual, but now it needs to be looked at." "I have reported this to my managers, and I am awaiting a response," he continued.

In several neighboring settlements, notably Moree, the impact of the sea waves, according to him, has increased as a result of the construction of coastal defense barriers in Cape Coast and Anomabo.

He said that sand-winning operations in some of the areas had made the issue worse.

Social action

The assemblyman announced that he was arranging for two truckloads of rocks to be placed along the coastlines in the meantime to stop any further assault on the beachside residences.

He reasoned, "We cannot wait till there are casualties before we act."

He made an appeal to Moree natives for assistance in defending the neighborhood.

Coastal settlements like Moree and Ekon have seen the effects of increasing sea levels for a number of years.

SDG targets

While SDG Goal 13 focuses on enhancing education, raising awareness, and human and institutional capacity for mitigating, adapting, and reducing the impact of climate change, it is crucial to look closely at the coastal communities in developing nations like Moree and give them the tools they need to lessen the impact on their livelihoods, socioeconomic status, and cultural practices.

The International Council for Science has urged for a specific sustainable development objective for oceans and coastlines to work with mitigation and adaptation measures, innovation, and sustainable development to establish resilient systems, among other things.
