Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, the minister of health, has denied media reports that he has threatened to shut down Zipline Medical Delivery Service in Ghana.
Following a meeting of the Ghana Health Service Management throughout the week, several media outlets stated that the Health Minister criticized the usage of the well-appreciated drone delivery service and threatened to speak to his superiors to stop the use of the service because it was being exploited.
The Ministry of Health, however, refuted the media allegations in a press release on Friday, claiming that the minister had instead praised the procedures while voicing certain reservations.
"At the same event, the Minister voiced his opinion that Zipline's services, which employ drones to carry medical supplies to hospitals, According to the statement, facilities "are saving lives every day, and stakeholders should strive to use the services prudently for the goal of sustainability.
The statement went on to say that rather, "the minister bemoaned the practice where some healthcare facilities just place orders for Zipline services at times when the service is not most needed."
The statement continued, "Due to the unpredictable nature of emerging technologies like Zipline, it will be in the best interests of the Ministry and its agencies to routinely review the rules governing its operations to ensure compliance with governmental policies."
The statement provided reassurance that the "Ministry remains committed to the operations of Zipline in the provision of essential healthcare services and will keep exploring all available means to make this sustainable."
The Minister also criticized the false stories that stated he had suggested the National Health Insurance Scheme was ineffective.
Ghana's medical drone delivery service has won praise from across the world and has been touted as the biggest in existence.
United States Vice President Kamala Harris praised Ghana during her recent visit for setting an international example in the use of drones to transport critical medical supplies to off-the-grid locations.
