According to Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, a candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the agriculture sector has been highlighted as the solution to Ghana's high rate of youth unemployment. Dr. Afriyie Akoto stated during a town hall meeting hosted by the NPP Canada chapter that Ghana simply needed to make the necessary investment to fully realize the sector's potential.
He emphasized that the agriculture industry offers a wide range of employment options, including industrialization, agroprocessing, and advertising, among others. Dr. Afriyie Akoto argued that Ghana's fortunes may change with the right investments.
The vision of Dr. Afriyie Akoto is geared towards young people. He thinks that the best way to influence the kids is to provide them with access to jobs.

"The young people are actually the focus of my vision." By giving young people jobs, you may have an influence on them. "The agriculture industry holds the key, and the kids absolutely need work," he said.
Dr. Afriyie Akoto responded to a question concerning the destiny of NPP youth under his leadership by pointing out that realistic policies are the best way to deal with the variety of unemployment difficulties that the youth face. He promised the crowd that he would implement investment-focused policies as part of his leadership.
As president of Ghana, Dr. Afriyie Akoto advocated forming an agriculture management team under his direction. The team will be made up of representatives from seven prominent agriculture-related ministries, including the Ministries of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development, Roads and Highways, Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation.
He also voiced unhappiness with the chicken industry's decreasing fortunes, over which he has little control because of difficulties with international commerce. The difficulties that poultry farmers have encountered over the years, such as the high price of chicken feed, were acknowledged by Dr. Afriyie Akoto. He emphasized, however, that Ghana's soy output has increased from 150,000 metric tons to 230,000 metric tons and that foreign commerce plays a key role in the difficulties the poultry sector is facing.
"I am aware of the difficulties faced by poultry producers over the years, to the point that the cost of chicken feed has occasionally more than doubled." The problem has been linked by some to a scarcity of maize, while soy beans are also said to be hard to come by by others.
