In order to provide beneficiaries of its projects with safe and wholesome food, the World Food Programme (WFP) is working with regional producers.

The project involves food production, processing, and distribution and is a component of WFP's local sourcing strategy to guarantee that food products purchased for vulnerable recipients in African nations affected by conflict, climate change, and the socioeconomic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are secure and up to par in terms of quality.

Under the project, financing would be provided to companies that process goods including grains, cereals, fortified oils, cereal mixes, and peanut butter.

Barbara Tulu Clemens, the Country Director of WFP in Ghana, stated yesterday at a five-day conference on food safety and quality in Africa that her organization will make sure that more than half of the necessary nutritious food is provided.

They purchased the goods needed for their initiatives from within the continent.

Experts in food quality and safety from throughout Africa and beyond are present, and they are talking about ways to encourage local procurement of nutritious food items in the nations where the initiative is active in order to save lives.

Aflatoxin management and control strategies, the effects of climate change, and security considerations are other subjects.

Additionally, they will go over the significance of food standards in controlling food safety in emerging nations with insufficient regulatory frameworks.

According to Ms. Clemens, the WFP was assisting two industrial food processors in the nation with the construction of new food processing facilities while also creating systems for global food safety and quality control.

One of the firms already sends food that can save lives to fragile nations like Afghanistan, and the other company also produces healthy, wholesome meals for domestic use.

Three food processing facilities will also soon be put into operation, according to Ms. Clemens, in partnership with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), to make wholesome cereal mixes and other inventive regional cuisines to fulfill the dietary demands of nearby populations.

According to her, the WFP country strategy plan, which would be put into effect between 2024 and 2028, also included proposals to make it easier to develop multi-user agro-processing businesses for a variety of commodities.

Food and nutrition, according to Roderick Kwabena Daddey-Adjei, the FDA's deputy chief executive officer, are essential for human health.  decent lifestyle and thriving neighborhood, as well as attaining the Sustainable Development Goals.

In the midst of economic problems brought on by conflicts, natural catastrophes, and climate change, he claimed that the WFP played a crucial role in assisting Africa to attain food security.

He said that the WFP was carrying out several initiatives, such as assisting the national school feeding programs.

He said that in an effort to guarantee food safety, the authority had created a food safety policy and a progressive licensing program that helped regional businesses make food items in sanitary circumstances.

This will make it simpler for local businesses to get the WFP's support for local sourcing.

He thus advised local businesses to utilize the programs to acquire technical assistance to satisfy the necessary standards and current regulations for food safety.

Virginia Siebenrok, the WFP's food safety quality chief, also stressed the need for the gathering to address issues, share information, align visions, and standardize operational and technical support measures.
