Following a rainfall that slammed the area last Saturday, almost 1,000 residents—including schoolchildren—have been forced to flee their homes in the Nanumba North Municipality and Mion District in the Northern Region.
Numerous residential dwellings, educational facilities, medical centers, security stations, and other real estate valued in the millions of Ghana cedis were destroyed.
There was, however, no casualty reported.
According to Daily Graphic checks, some of the displaced people were stuck, while others were staying with relatives at mosques and churches.
Destruction
Many inhabitants in Bimbila, the administrative center of Nanumba North Municipality, had the roofs of their homes torn off, while others had their homes entirely demolished.
Dangbe, Masaaka, Baayanwaya, and Kapuhi are the places most severely impacted.
Additionally, the Electoral Commission, Ghana National Fire Service, and Ghana Immigration Service buildings were also damaged.
Similar circumstances occurred in the rural village of DC Kura in the Mion District, where 23 homes, six schools, and other property were damaged.
Assessment
According to Abdulai Yakubu, the Municipal Chief Executive for Nanumba North, authorities from the National Disaster Management Organization have started determining the extent of the damage.
"NADMO has started an assessment, but it is quite devastating; a number of homes have been completely destroyed with the roofs off and the walls collapsed," he claimed.
He stated that the assembly and NADMO were working urgently to organize some relief supplies for the victims.
Considering the degree of the disaster's destruction, the products might not be sufficient for them, he said, to get them out of their dilemma.
Appeal
Samuel Mahama, the District Chief Executive for Mion, visited the damaged regions on Sunday and urged the local government and other benefactors to assist the victims.
Some of the victims who talked with the Daily Graphic claimed that because the accident had destroyed all of their homes, they had been left stranded with their families.
They consequently requested assistance from the government, charitable individuals, and nonprofit groups.
