Nine pupils died after the boat carrying them from school collapsed in a canal last Wednesday afternoon in Faanaa-Bortianor in the Ga South Municipality.

The last body, a female solely known as Victoria, was found yesterday at around 11:30 a.m. Eight of the bodies of the children, who ranged in age from one and a half to twelve years, were discovered at approximately 6 p.m. on the day of the event.

Twelve kids were in the canoe when it crashed, including the dead, who were made up of three men and six females.

The canoe's paddler and the other three, on the other hand, managed to survive the catastrophe.

The MCE has stated that a 12-year-old kid was operating the boat that dragged the nine students under water.

Residency

The youngsters attend a private school in Wiaboman behind Pambros (in Weija-Gbawe), where they formerly resided with their parents and guardians at Faanaa, Bortianor (in Ga South).

After school, the kids were crossing the canal that divides Wiaboman from Faanaa when the event happened.

The victims had been identified, according to Emmanuel Adu-Boahen, the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), who confirmed the incident to the Daily Graphic yesterday, and the bodies had been deposited at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital Mortuary for additional investigations.

Recognition and destruction

The Weija-Gbawe Municipal Chief Executive, Patrick Kumor; Weija-Gbawe Member of Parliament, Tina Mensah; Ga South Municipal Chief Executive, Joseph Yarni Stephen; and Weija Polie Commander, Freeman, were also named by Mr. Adu-Boahen.

Officials from NADMO and Freeman Kumashie had also visited the incident site and the affected families to offer their sympathies.

We just got back from the scene, so we're awaiting the MCE's next course of action, the man stated.

Dan Bright Abayateye, the assemblyman for the Bortianor Electoral Area, referred to the tragedy as sad and painful and said that it was unprecedented in the region.

He claimed that after the occurrence, the locals were distraught.

Survivor

Enyonam Ekpe, one of the three survivors, said, among other things, that the paddler, a 12-year-old, disregarded advice to split the canoe's passengers because it was overcrowded.

She said that because it was the only option accessible, they had no choice but to join it.

She claimed that the canoe capsized immediately after they were hit by a tidal wave, which caused it to shift.

Since then, the police have started looking into the situation.
