Twenty-six female head porters, also known in Ghana as "Kayayei," who were trained at the HODEM Vocational Institute in Pokuase, Accra, to earn a living and develop their skills, have finished the curriculum.

The recipients went through a four-week intensive training program where they learned about financial literacy, digital financial services, gender equity, maternity and reproductive health, family life, and domestic violence. Additionally, they received training in practical trades including baking, soap-making, and beading.

The graduates also received management training for starting microbusinesses, which was organized by Opportunity International Savings and Loans (Opportunity International), one of the top savings and loan organizations in the nation.

The Kayayei initiative, the sixth in a series, aims to give economically underprivileged young female head porters in Accra life and business skills to help them succeed.

They create solid livelihoods for themselves, make money, and put money away for a more secure future.

Participants in the initiative, which was created in partnership with Kayayei Association Leaders, came from Agbogbloshie, Darkuman, and Mallam Atta Market.

Based on the young ladies' preference for the specialist occupational sector they were taught in, start-up kits were given to them during the graduation ceremony. This is intended to assist them in starting their own small businesses following graduation.

Azara Abukari-Haroun, a Board Member and the Chairperson of Opportunity International's Transformation Committee, who presided over the ceremony, emphasized that the organization was dedicated to making a positive difference in people's lives and urged the beneficiaries to be confident in the new skills they had gained as a result of the program.

The young women expressed their joy and appreciation to Opportunity International for the chance they had been given. They were also hopeful about the success of the trade they had chosen and the significant contribution it would make to their development of financial resilience.

About

The Allan and Nesta Ferguson Charitable Trust and the CalVal Investors Foundation formerly provided funding for the Kayayei Program. Over the previous five years, Opportunity International has trained 108 women with the help of the two foundations.

The Medicor Foundation is now funding the scheme for a two-year term with the aim of training and supplying 200 young, economically underprivileged female head porters in Accra.
