An individual from Nigeria was found guilty of impersonating COP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah on social media and scamming trusting individuals. The Accra Circuit Court One sentenced the individual to eight years in jail with hard labor.
Bright Daniels, a convicted inmate at the Nsawam Prisons at the time of the incident, denied perpetrating the offense.
He had a thorough trial and was found guilty.
In the courtroom presided over by Mrs. Afia Owusua Appiah, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Emmanuel Nyamekye stated the facts and identified the complainant as COP Mrs. Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, a former director of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service and current executive director of the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO).
Daniels, a former prisoner from Nigeria who completed a seven-year sentence in the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons, is a former prisoner.
The court was informed that his accomplice, Livinus Amadianaeze Ugwu, a Nigerian ex-convict, is on the run.
DSP Nyamekye claimed that in April 2021, COP Addo-Danquah's attention was drawn to a phony Facebook Messenger account made in her name and using her image that was being used to extort money from police officers under the pretext of getting them slots at African Union (AU) and United Nations (UN) Missions in Somalia and Sudan. The account was being used to solicit money from police personnel.
According to him, the owner of the aforementioned bogus Facebook account got in touch with the victims and asked them to send money through a mobile money network.
Detective Chief Inspector Baffoe sent the number GH10,000.00, and Daniels later withdrew the money.
According to the prosecution, investigations showed that the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons' surrounding area was where the phone number was found.
Further research established that Daniels was the owner of the phone number. A Samsung Galaxy A02 phone that Daniels used to communicate with Ugwu and a Tecno feature phone that was used to accept the cash from Detective Chief Inspector Baffoe were found after a police search.
According to DSP Nyamekye, forensic analysis of the gadgets indicated that Daniels and Ugwu planned to use COP Addo-Danquah's identity and image to solicit money from police officers under the guise of securing them a spot on a flight to the African Union and UN Mission in Somalia.
Daniels afterwards purchased the SIM card with the number 02*******, which was then used to collect payments from their victims.
After an inquiry, he was prosecuted and brought before this court after admitting to the crime.
